Lamentation, Conscientisation, and Cultural Critique: Wole Soyinka’s Poetic Response to Multiculturalism

Abstract

This article examines Wole Soyinka’s poetic engagement with multiculturalism through the triadic analytical framework of lamentation, conscientisation and multiculturalism. Drawing on Paulo Freire’s concept of critical consciousness and postcolonial cultural theory, selected poems across Soyinka’s collections will be analysed to demonstrate how he employs poetic lamentation and mourning for cultural fragmentation and loss as a pathway to political conscientisation and social action. Through close textual analysis, this paper argues that Soyinka’s poetry explores three dimensions of multiculturalism: (1) critique of religious and ethnic violence, (2) resistance to cultural homogenisation, and (3) advocacy for pluralistic coexistence. The study contributes to scholarship on African poetry and multiculturalism by illuminating how aesthetic mourning can function as political pedagogy.
